Let me begin by saying this tale has a bittersweet ending, thus the title of my piece.
When I was first married, I had visions of how Christmas should be. Dozens of red roses, lingerie, chocolate, pretty baubles.
On our first Christmas as a married couple, my husband gave me a vacuum. I smiled weakly. He got the picture and asked what was wrong.
“I wanted something romantic,” I said.
Fast forward a year. On that Christmas Eve, we arrived at our small business separately and before our staff were there. When I came through the door, I saw an envelope pasted to the receptionist’s desk with my name on it. Inside was a beautiful card and a poem my husband had written. It brought tears to my eyes.
I called out, but he didn’t respond. I figured he had his office door closed to speak to a client.
In the next part of the office, there was a gaily-wrapped gift on a desk and my name on the tag. Inside was the sexiest lingerie I’d ever seen. I danced around, then shouted his name. Still no response.
I went deeper into our offices and found more presents: red roses, other poems, chocolates.
I was sobbing like a baby when I got to his office and threw my arms around him, blubbering about the best Christmas ever.
He hugged me and said, “Oh, okay.”
Oh, okay? I kissed him deeply and said I was taking him to breakfast as soon as I checked my face. There on the bathroom sink was one last gaily-wrapped package. Inside was a diamond and sapphire ring I’d coveted for months. I screamed.
He came inside and grinned. “I did good?”
Did he ever.
It was a Christmas I’ll never forget. A few years back I lost him. He’d gone to the doctor for a mild medical problem and took the prescribed medication. There was a reaction. My husband passed quickly and too soon.
His love, loyalty and sense of fun are what I use for my male characters in my romances.
