Every author imagines the day when they’ll get “The Call.” That infamous phone call from an agent or editor saying they like your baby—oh, I mean your book. You know, that document that holds hours of sweat, angst, tears and most of all hope. The one you emailed off maybe months ago with the click of a button and then tried to forget about. Yeah, that book.
In many ways it’s like the long dreamed of marriage proposal. No matter how much we think of it or even imagine it happening, you’re never prepared when it actually does. Because it’s still a dream until that moment it becomes reality.
I submitted Bonds of Trust to Carina Press for multiple reasons. I knew I wanted to go with a digital-first publisher and had spent months researching the many that are now out there. I liked the quality of books that were being published from Carina Press. Plus I like Angela James, the Executive Editor, and that Carina Press was backed by Harlequin. For where I was in my publishing career, I believed that Carina Press would help to grow my name better than any other epublisher. It was a career move.
I also followed my instincts. I heard Angela speak at a conference and she said that Carina Press was actively seeking novel length erotic romance. Ding. That was my book. Two months later she put a personal call out for erotic romance novels. Another ding. I listened and believed that if I got my book to Angela, she would buy it.
When my book was ready a month later, I sent it to Angela. That was a Monday afternoon. On Thursday morning, I gotThe Call. I almost didn’t answer the phone, but on a whim I did and thank heavens for that. I almost dropped my coffee cup I was so shocked. Four days! Nobody gets a response on a slush pile submission in four days! I suddenly became the bumbling, stuttering fool that I hadn’t been since high school. Angela actually asked me if I wanted her to call back. Ahh—No! Especially when she was offering to acquire the next two books in the series as well. A three book deal—No Way!
It was only 9:30 AM and I floated on the adrenalin high for the entire day. The fulfillment of a dream is always an amazing feeling which is why we all continue to reach for those dreams even when the odds are against us. It’s rarely easy and often requires sacrifices, but I’m really glad I took the chance and went after mine.
My experience with Carina Press has been incredible. The entire staff is open and helpful and the author community is so supportive. Most importantly, my editor, Rhonda Helms, is phenomenal. She’s taught me a lot and has worked with me to make every book better. There’s a personal quality with Carina Press that really clicks for me. I feel like they really take the time to grow their authors and that requires more than just publishing your book. They are truly helping me to build my career, which is exactly why I submitted to them in the first place.
About the Author:Lynda Aicher has always loved to read. It’s a simple fact that has been true since she discovered the words of Judy Blume at the age of ten. After years of weekly travel as a consultant implementing computer software into global companies, she ended her nomadic lifestyle to raise her two children. Now, her imagination is her only limitation on where she can go and her writing lets her escape from the daily duties of being a mom, wife, chauffer, scheduler, cook, teacher, volunteer, cleaner and mediator. If writing wasn’t a priority, it wouldn’t get done.
